Conducting

Ian specialised in conducting in his BA (Hons) degree at the Royal Military School of Music (Kneller Hall) .  Over the last 10 years he has held three high profile posts within the Army: Bandmaster of the King's Division Normandy Band (2000 - 2004), Bandmaster of the Irish Guards (2004 - 2008), and Bandmaster of the Heavy Cavalry and Cambrai Band (2008 - 2010 ), and has recently taken over the post of Bandmaster of the Lancashire Artillery Volunteers Band; he is respected for his ability to lead and manage musicians within rehearsals and concert scenarios.  Ian is a freelance conductor of wind bands, brass bands and orchestras across the North West.

Private music tuition: brass, piano, theory (ABRSM - Diploma), composition, arranging, conducting.

Not only does Ian hold BA (Hons) and LLCM Performance as a practical musician, but he also has 25 years' worth of professional musical experience to call on; he is also currently studying for his MMus (Composition) at Durham University.  Ian has taught music within the Army for the last 15 years and has taken musicians from approximately grade 6 ABRSM through to LTCL Performance diploma.

Provision of piano accompaniment up to grade 8 ABRSM.

Ian gained grade 8 ABRSM piano in 1986; since then he has gained a great deal of experience as an accompanist in ABRSM grade examinations, performance diplomas and also in concerts and recitals. Ian can be used as an accompanist, or his piano playing can come as an integral part of a teaching package.

Composing and arranging to commission.

Ian has written extensively for wind band, brass band, choir and differently structured chamber ensembles.  His music has been performed by bands of the British Army in many high profile situations, including engagements in the presence of Royalty, and also now by many civilian community bands as a result of his collaboration with Safe Music Publications.  In May 2010 the Allegri String Quartet gave the first performance of Ian's String Quartet No. 1 at Durham University.

Presenting workshops training conductors and bands to understand each other.

Many bands fail to reach their potential due to two factors: firstly, the lack of technical training in baton technique and rehearsal management available to conductors; and secondly, the lack of understanding by players in bands of a conductor's aims and directions .  Ian will travel out to respective band rehearsals to give 'best-practice' ideas to conductors and players regarding musical communication.

Provision of brass and woodwind players for engagements.

Ian has close links with many fine players, instrumental teachers and conductors across the UK who have a high degree of experience within their respective musical disciplines; many of these musicians welcome the opportunity to work with new ensembles and musicians where and when the opportunity arises.
